Meet Athena, a horse surrendered by her owner who had spent many years with a pasture companion in a small paddock, only interacting with humans during feeding and watering times. A few years before she was given to JAHRS, her pasture companion passed away, leaving her entirely alone. As a result, for several months after arriving at JAHRS, she resisted human contact. However, with love and patience, she began to let us catch her and lead her to her daily grain. She now enjoys being part of a herd and has developed a special bond with Charlie, our pony mare.

Sarge

Resilience echoes through the stables as we encounter Sarge, another owner surrender, who arrived at JAHRS in a very emaciated condition. After being blanketed for the winter by his previous owner, it was discovered, once the blanket was removed, that he was quite underweight. A vet exam revealed that his back teeth were so worn down he couldn't chew hay or grass well enough to swallow it. We immediately placed him on a mash diet, three times a day, and he has now reached a healthy weight and can still nibble on hay and grass between his mash meals.
